WAR ON THOUGHT

"THE WORLD CHANGES ACCORDING TO THE WAY PEOPLE SEE IT, AND IF YOU ALTER, EVEN BY A MILLIMETER, THE WAY A PERSON LOOKS OR PEOPLE LOOK AT REALITY, THEN YOU CAN CHANGE IT." - JAMES BALDWIN

COVID BROUGHT HURT TO OUR WORLD, AND TO OUR RELATIONSHIPS. OUR COMPASS OF REALITY WAS SKEWED AND A NEW REALITY TOOK ITS PLACE. IT WASN’T ONLY THE VIRUS THAT WAS INFECTIOUS, IT WAS HOW WE SAW EACH OTHER, THE WORDS WE SPOKE, THE IMAGES WE SHARED, THE THOUGHTS WE THOUGHT. OUR BUBBLES BECAME SMALLER, SEPARATED BY PHONES.

I LOST A FRIENDSHIP BECAUSE OF COVID, AND FOR YEARS I FACED TREMENDOUS HURT, BEWILDERMENT, LOSS, AND ADVERSITY IN MY EFFORTS OF HOPE TO REGAIN IT. IT WAS DEATH BY A MILLION CUTS, AND MY WAY OUT WAS THIS PROJECT. MY SUBJECTS WERE AN EASY PICK — MY CHILDREN AS THEY WERE ALWAYS AVAILABLE. THE THEME IN MY ART HAS ALWAYS HAD A TOUCH OF WHIMSY, BUT THIS TIME I WANTED TO DIG DEEPER INTO MY AUTOMATED THOUGHTS BELOW THE SURFACE. I WANT TO SHOW MY REALITY, THE IDIOSYNCRASIES, AND IN HOPE, CHANGE THE NARRATIVE.

THESE PIECES ARE PART OF A LARGER BODY OF WORK THAT IS CURRENTLY UNFOLDING AND IN PRODUCTION, AND MY HOPES ARE TO CAPTURE THE SPIRIT OF SURREALISM THROUGH AN IDIOSYNCRATIC AND WHIMSICAL LENS.
